COVID Toes

As researchers race to find a vaccine and leaders impose restrictions to help stop the spread of COVID-19, a new potential symptom of the virus may have been discovered.

Doctors treating COVID-19 now say that purple or blue toe lesions appearing on patients’ toes may be a way to diagnose infection, as these have  appeared in otherwise asymptomatic and severe cases alike; however, so far there have been no conclusive studies to validate the phenomenon now being called “COVID toes.”

“We don’t know for sure if it’s related to COVID-19, but when it’s so common right now during a pandemic and is occurring in otherwise asymptomatic or mildly affected patients, it seems too much of a coincidence not to be a manifestation of the virus for patients in their teens and 20s,” Amy Paller, the chair of dermatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, said in a statement.

COVID toe was reported early on when the outbreak first started. Health officials are still looking into this new development to learn more from it.
